Tibetan rugs are carpets produced in Tibet and surrounding Himalayan regions, including Nepal.
These rugs are known for their distinctive knotting technique, thick wool, and traditional designs, often featuring Buddhist symbols, dragons, and geometric patterns.
Tibetan carpets reflect the religious and cultural traditions of the region.
Tibetans have always traveled widely and adapted design elements from other cultures. The strongest influences have come from the south and east, Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist, but also from the west Asia. Since the Dali Lama fled to India in 1959, many Tibetan weavers have immigrated to Nepal, were they have set up carpet workshops.
Majority of older Tibetan rugs left are remnants of monastery decorations and seat covers.
