Sileh

Sileh rugs are a type of Caucasian carpet associated with the Kuba region of Azerbaijan. These rugs are characterized by fine geometric designs, detailed patterns, and precise weaving, typical of Kuba carpets. Sileh rugs are appreciated for their clarity and refinement. The S-design, which extends all over these rugs in different colors, is an abstraction of the dragon motif. The feet of the dragon are visible in the lower part of the S, whilst a fine line in the upper part just gives a hint of the dragon's horn. The older the rug the easier to distinguish the dragon and the colors are lighter and more cheerful. The characteristic of Sille rugs is that they generally consist of two parts sewn together lengthways. Perhaps they were used as door hangings or just because of the available loom sizes.
