Very few carpets from East Turkestan can be given a date earlier than 1800, but the number and quality of 19 and 20 Century pieces suggest that a highly organized production had existed for many centuries. The carpets of the region are often known in the West as Samarkand, from the name of the city in West Turkestan where they were sold for export to Europe and America at the end of the 19 Century.

Most of the extensive production of East Turkestan was concentrated in the oasis of Kashgar, Yarkand, and Khotan. These large fertile areas are dotted with villages with inhabited by people of Turkic origin, Turanians, Kirghiz, Kazaks, and various Mongol and Chinese groups.
