Polonaise carpets are a group of Persian rugs from the Safavid period, often associated with royal workshops. These carpets are typically woven with silk foundations and may include gold and silver threads, giving them a luxurious appearance. The name “Polonaise” comes from their historical association with Polish collections, though they were produced in Persia. Polonaise carpets are a group of 17th Century Persian carpets woven in silk and brocaded gold and silver. There are referred to as Polonaise because examples of this group were first exhibited by Count Czartoryski of Poland, and some of those displayed his family coat of arms. It is believed that these items were woven in Either Kashan or Isphahn, the two major weaving centers of Iran at the time. There are samples of Polonaise kilims as well.
