Northwest Persia refers to a region of Iran that includes major carpet-producing areas such as Tabriz, Heriz, and Karadja. Carpets from this region often display bold geometric designs, medallions, and strong structural qualities, reflecting both village and workshop weaving traditions. Northwest Persian rugs are among the most important groups within the broader Persian carpet tradition. A great many impressive rugs were made in northwest Persia during the 18 and 19 Century. They often display both Persian and Caucasian decorations. Typically Persian palm leaves alternate with the forked tendrils of Caucasian rugs. The Persian design with its elegant lines appears stiff and geometric.
