Oriental Rugs Dictionary

Mongolian

Mongolian rugs are carpets and textiles produced in Mongolia and surrounding regions, often influenced by Tibetan and Chinese weaving traditions. These rugs may feature Buddhist symbols, simple geometric patterns, and natural color palettes. Mongolian weaving reflects the nomadic culture and artistic traditions of the region. Any discussion of carpet production in Mongolia should be considered purely speculative, since there is no literary or archaeological evidence for carpet production in the region.

Most of the so called Mongolian saddle bags are now being more accurately attributed to Ningxia. They, together with pieces from monasteries, were exported to Mongolia in great numbers as indicated by the numerous Ningxia column rugs with Mongolian inscriptions.
