Masulipatam carpets are Indian rugs associated with the port city of Masulipatam (Machilipatnam) in southeastern India.
These carpets were produced during periods of trade with European markets and often display floral designs influenced by Persian and Mughal styles.
Masulipatam carpets reflect the development of carpet weaving in India under international influence.
Beautiful carpets were made in India, at first by the Persian craftsmen introduced by the Mughal emperors. Later during the 17 Century, there was a change of style when purely Persian motifs began to appear.
At Masulipatam in the south, mixture of Indian, Persian and even geometric Mamluk motifs started to appear.
