The province of Hamadan, with a capital of the same name, stretches southeast from neighboring Kurdistan. In ancient times, Hamadan was a city of considerable importance, and the region has long been one of the largest producers of rugs and carpets. Thousands of looms in both workshops and cottages have produced rugs and carpets of various designs. Similar but much finer rugs were made in Malayer. Hamadan rugs are Persian village carpets woven in the Hamadan region of western Iran, one of the most prolific rug-producing areas in Persia. The region includes many villages, each producing rugs with slightly different designs. Hamadan carpets typically feature geometric medallions, bold patterns, and strong natural colors. They are known for their durability and represent one of the most widely collected groups of Persian village rugs.
