Fereghan (Farahan)

Fereghan rugs are carpets woven in the Fereghan district of western Persia (Iran), near the Farahan region. These rugs are often characterized by Herati designs, intricate repeating patterns, and balanced compositions. Fereghan carpets became popular in the 19th century and were widely produced for export markets. They are appreciated for their refined designs and durable construction. Fereghan carpets proved popular with the European and American markets and remains so today. As limits of the Fereghan region have never been defined , rugs and carpets sometimes attributed either to Fereghan or Sarouk. In the industry they are also called Sarouk Fereghan. The allover Herati pattern is the most common Fereghan design.
