Donegal carpets are woven in County Donegal in Ireland, where a carpet industry developed in the late 19th century.
Donegal rugs are known for their handwoven construction, rich wool textures, and decorative designs influenced by oriental carpets. Many Donegal carpets were produced for European and American interiors.
These rugs reflect the adaptation of oriental carpet aesthetics within European textile production.
In 1858 a factory of weaving hand knotted rugs was opened in the village of Killybegs in Donegal, Ireland. Hand knotted rugs have continuously been knotted in this factory. Designs were neoclassical and reproductions for museums and estates.
With the popularity of Arts and Craft and Art Nouveau movements designs were adapted in large scales.
