Camel hair refers to the natural fiber obtained from the coat of the camel, sometimes used in carpet weaving. In oriental rugs, camel hair is typically used either as a pile material or as a natural-colored background. The fiber produces a soft brown tone that is often left undyed. Camel hair rugs are frequently associated with tribal and nomadic weaving traditions, particularly in Persian and Afghan carpets. The wool or hair of the camel is used rarely in pile rug weaving and kilims. Camel hair is distinguished from wool by its fineness and pigmentation granules. However the name is often used to refer to the camel color woolen carpets such as in Serabs and many Bidjar carpets.
