Baotou (Paotou) Rugs

Baotou carpets are woven in the city of Baotou in Inner Mongolia, China. This region became an important center of Chinese carpet production during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Baotou rugs often display traditional Chinese symbolic motifs, including Buddhist emblems, cloud patterns, floral medallions, and geometric lattice designs. These carpets were frequently produced for export markets as well as for domestic use. Baotou carpets typically feature soft wool and balanced decorative designs characteristic of northern Chinese weaving traditions. A town of Inner Mongolia in China northeast of Ningxia. Rugs of Baotou and surrounding villages are more densely knotted than those of Ningxia and use more blue in their designs. Early Baotou rugs have all-over repeating patterns while later rugs are more pictorial.
