Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is an important historical region of carpet production located in northwest Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan. This area has produced many famous Caucasian and Persian rugs.
Carpets from the Azerbaijan region are known for their bold geometric designs, vibrant colors, and strong tribal influences. Important weaving centers in this region include Tabriz, Karabagh, Shirvan, and Kuba.
The region’s long carpet-weaving tradition has contributed significantly to the development of Caucasian and Persian rug styles.
Carpet production was primarily for domestic use until the mid 19 Century. In the last quarter of the 19 Century and early 20th Century, carpet production was a major export industry. Pile rugs of the region are traditionally Turkish knotted.
There is a group of Azerbaijan embroidery dating back to the 17 Century, primarily from northern Azerbaijan. The foundation fabric is usually in silk. Often, these embroideries have a squarish format. They were usually used as kerchiefs. Most designs are similar to those pf early Caucasian floral carpets. Designs of compact roundels, stars and cartouche shapes are also common. Many 19 Century rugs were adopted from such embroideries.
