Alpujarra

Alpujjara means “Grassland.” The term refers to rugs first woven in Alpujarra in the province of Granada, Spain. These rugs were first woven in the 15 or 16 Centuries during the oorish period amd continued to be woven into the 19 Century. They have a coarsely-woven looped pile and very heavy. Usually, a separately produced elaborate fringe was attached to all for sides the rug. Often, the date and the name of the person for whom it was woven was included in the design. Designs were simple floral and animal motifs. Alpujarra refers to a mountainous region in southern Spain along the Sierra Nevada, historically known for producing traditional woven textiles and rugs. The weaving traditions of this region were strongly influenced by Moorish culture, which shaped many aspects of Spanish decorative arts following centuries of Islamic presence in the Iberian Peninsula. Textiles from the Alpujarra region often feature geometric patterns and bold color combinations.
