Scandinavian Tapestry
For around 200 years from the middle of the 16th Century a tradition of pictorial tapestry weaving flourished in Norway, producing some of the most striking and original images in European textile art. Drawing on the skills and technology of Flemish weavers, and conceived in a largely medieval style, these tapestries interpret a range of popular biblical stories with remarkable directness. Many were probably intended for the bridal bed, and contained implicit messages of encouragement and warning for the newly wed couple.
