Chemical Wash

The applications of chemicals (sometimes lime, chlorine compounds or wood ash) to a rug or carpet to soften the colors, soften the wool and increase the sheen of the pile. Harsh chemical washes are cited as the cause of weakened or embritted fibers in some old rugs.
