The province of Hamadan, with a capital of the same name, stretches southeast from neighboring Kurdistan.  In ancient times, Hamadan was a city of considerable importance, and the region has long been one of the largest producers of rugs and carpets. Thousands of looms in both workshops and cottages have produced rugs and carpets of various designs. Similar but much finer rugs were made in Malayer.
