The term Suzani is used to describe embroideries than were done in the area known as Uzbekistan today. The word is in Farsi and the meaning is needlework. These Embroideries were done mainly by women and girls and in many cases they were part of dowries. They major cities for Suzani production were Samarkand, Tashkent and Shahrisabz, with the later producing the top quality. Most were made with cotton or linen background and silk embroideries. The most rare and valuable of the Suzanies are the so called “Medalion Suzani”. The design in these consists of a very large medallion in the center with various other motifs around it.
