ORIENTAL RUGS DICTIONARY

Oushak (Ushak)

In active production by second half of the 16th Century, the Oushak factory was particularly well situated to serve the export trade, with the port of Izmir (Smyrna) to the west coast and the port of Antalya to the south. In the 17th Century, the production of this workshop surpassed that of all of the other centers. Oushak retained its reputation right up to the 19th Century, when its carpets became known as “Smyrna Rugs” after the port through which they were exported.
