Gendje (Genjeh)

The large town of Gendje was known as Yelisavetpol in transit Russia, before the Soviets changed the name to Kirovabad in 1920. The name Gendje also refers to the mountains district around the town. Because of the location of the town, being surrounded by Kazak, Shirvan and Karabagh regions, vast quantities of weavings were shipped via this town to the eastern markets.

In appearance, many Gendje rugs look like Kazaks and it is very difficult to distinguish between the two. Many Gendje items have a distinctive stripped design which simplifies the comparison.
