Aubusson

Aubusson workshops were established in 1743 to manufacture pile carpets primarily for the nobility, to whom the Savonnerie court production was not available. Aubusson carpets were, however, also made for the royal residences. Soon after the production of pile carpets began flat woven carpets followed and remained the main line. Aubusson, tapestry production which was previously in use in this district, was adopted as well.
Different styles and color palettes were introduced in this process related to the production era. These styles are mostly known as Directoire, Charles the X, Luis Philippe, Napoleon Etc.
By now many of these carpets are being reproduced at various carpet weaving centers internationally, all using the term Aubusson.
